The Rum Diary – popcorn, Gonzo, action!

Ooh, we’ve just seen the trailer for the film adaptation of the ‘lost’ Hunter S. Thompson novel, The Rum Diary! It looks ace (see the link at the bottom of the post).

In a nutshell, (thanks Wikipedia) “the story involves a journalist called Paul Kemp, who moves from New York to work for a major newspaper, The Daily News, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Set in the late 1950s, the novel encompasses a tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust among the Americans who staff the newspaper.”

The screenplay was written by Bruce Robinson and it stars Johnny Depp as Kemp, a thinly veiled version of Thompson himself (or at least part of him).

It hits UK cinemas on 4th November. The website FilmDates.co.uk claims that it is only being shown at CineBowl – Uttoxeter. That seems highly unlikely and we’d put money on it coming to a screen near you. Although, if we’re wrong, we’ll personally apologise to the manager of CineBowl – Uttoxeter, for doubting his/her ability to pull in such a high profile premiere.

With that in mind… do you have a friend with a birthday in November? What better present could you get them than two tickets to see The Rum Diary at CineBowl – Uttoxeter tucked inside a copy of GONZO – a graphic biography of Hunter S. Thompson. There actually isn’t a better present (if you live in Uttoxeter).

  1. I’m very anxious to see Depp embody the good doctor again! Thompson influenced the past few generations with his invention of Gonzo Journalism. His work and antics will live on to influence even more generations to come. I paid tribute to Hunter S Thompson and his work with my portrait and article on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/02/in-memoriam-hunter-s-thompson.html
