Emma Hayley
Managing Director
& Publisher

Emma launched SelfMadeHero in 2007, after spotting a gap in the market for high quality graphic novels. Her background in publishing, following a postgraduate diploma in journalism at City University, London, has seen her work as a journalist, a film PR and as an editorial director for several small publishers. Since launching her own company, her focus has shifted to the business and entrepreneurial face of book publishing, while she remains hands-on in commissioning new titles.

She was named UK Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year, as part of the British Book Industry Awards 2008. Her aim is to create a publishing house relevant in the 21st century, developing new inspirational concepts and publishing across multi-platforms.


Sam Humphrey
Sales & Marketing

Sam joined SelfMadeHero after spending four years at Sheil Land Associates literary agency, where he worked on behalf of a number of prestigious clients. As well as agenting books, he played a central role in the development of Sheil Land's own digital publishing imprint, Peach Publishing. Sam has an MA in Modern and Contemporary Literature from Birkbeck College, University of London. He reads widely and spends much of his spare time blogging about publishing and literature. What he most enjoys is championing great books and bringing them to as many readers as possible.


Lizzie Kaye
Editorial & Production

Lizzie graduated from UEA in 2007 with a degree in English Literature. She went on to work in B2B publishing for three years, focusing mainly on production and design. She joined SelfMadeHero in the summer of 2010, pursuing a personal interest in graphic novels. She spends most of her free time reading.


Paul Smith
Press Officer

Paul is a publicist and journalist with over 20 years' experience and has nurtured a life-long love of comics and graphic novels in all forms. After studying European Literature and Art History, he first developed his career at Edinburgh International Film Festival. Joining London-based independent arthouse film distributor Tartan Films, he devised publicity campaigns for 'Irreversible', 'Secretary', 'SuperSize Me' and Jodorowsky's 'El Topo'. He was also instrumental in launching and developing the Asia Extreme brand which included 'Old Boy', 'Battle Royale', and 'Ring'.

He has recently been co-ordinating PR for the Association of Illustrators, including their book-related events and the annual illustration awards. A part-time college lecturer and industry speaker, he also reviews books and graphic novels in between other writing projects.
